Academy FAQs
What makes this school special compared to other schools in the area?
- Very low student to teacher ratio 1:3
- Therapeutic- offer on site OT, PT, speech, ABA, music therapists. Both pull out and integrated into the class day.
- We accept behaviors. None of the special needs schools here accept kids with aggression, SIB, not potty trained etc. They are intensively worked with in our behavior class and then moved to academically rigorous classrooms.
- Trauma informed- we use zero shame talking, loud voices, physical manipulation and punishment free.
- We focus on excellent education but also a great experience. We do field trips, events, holidays, camps, etc.. We want to make sure the kids enjoy their lives.
- We teach the gamut of skills- emotional Regulation, Academics, Social skills, Executive fUnction skills, self care, communication etc..
What is your philosophy on how children learn best?
Children learn best when their autonomy is respected. They feel safe, celebrated and understood.
Break down instruction and work into bite sized chunks. Allow some input and control over what they are learning.
How do you support students who are struggling academically or socially?
Break down tasks, slowed pacing, rewards, start with preferred interests.
Build their self esteem. When you see yourself successful, you become brave and curious.
How do teachers communicate with parents about a child’s progress?
- Use the App brightwheel for daily communications
- Progress reports 2x a year
